It is an Arabic Maquam (Middle eastern) composition based on a 10/8 beat originates from the Sephardic Jewish-Spanish tradition.
The Arabic lyrics were written either by Lisan al-Din lbm al-Khatib (1313 – 1374 AD), or by Muhammad Abdulrahim Al-Maslub (1793 – 1928 AD). The poem is considered one of the most famous Arabic pieces of its era.
